Example:
Expert System for Geological
and
Geotechnical Characterization
A geological site
characterization module has been developed in order
to infer the most likely soil
properties at each location of a vaster territorial grid based on the
available information. The system treats the input data in a consistent
manner via pre-defined and
transparent rules. Depending on such information geological or
geotechnical criteria are used. If the data is scarce (e.g.,
geologic maps only),
the rules define different possible alternative soil column
configurations and assign a weight to each of them.
The
system is used provides the necessary dynamic soil characterization in
order to perform soil amplification studies on vaste geographical
areas. It is possible by means of this tool to characterize entire
regions and produce soil amplification maps.
A full GIS system is integrated
and queried for every grid point where
the characterization needs to be performed. The GIS contains the
geological description of the soil formation to be used by the system
when detailed geotechnical information is not available.
A practical user interface shows to the user to follow every step
performed by the system.
