| 1982 |
Engineering Degree (Laurea) from the University of Rome with a
thesis on the behaviour of shallow tunnels supervised by Prof. M.
Ottaviani. |
| 1982-1983 |
Researcher at the University of Rome, working in the fields
of numerical modelling and constitutive behaviour of soils and rocks
applied to tunnelling. |
| 1983-1987 |
Research and teaching assistant at the University of
Alberta, Canada, under the direction of Prof. N.R. Morgenstern. Ph.D.
degree from the University of Alberta with a thesis on the behaviour
of tunnels near the advancing face (supervisors: Prof. N.R.
Morgenstern and Prof. P.K. Kaiser; external committee member: Prof.
E. Hoek, University of Toronto). Participated to a study for an
underground nuclear waste repository. |
| 1987-1991 |
Project Engineer at D'Appolonia Consulting Engineering
Company (Genoa, Italy), working on several geotechnical and rock
engineering projects. Most projects were related to large industrial
facilities, nuclear power plants, harbour and offshore structures,
earth dams, geotechnical investigations at sea and on land. |
| 1991-1994 |
Project Manager at D'Appolonia Consulting Engineering
Company (Genoa, Italy), in charge of geotechnical engineering
projects. The main projects were related to foundations of on-shore
and offshore structures, seismic response and liquefaction studies,
environmental geotechnics. Also involved in several studies related
to petroleum geomechanics, including evaluation of borehole
stability, rock drillability, recovery and testing of deep reservoir
sampling. |
| 1994-1998 |
Independent consulting engineer (since July 1994), working
in the fields of soil mechanics, soil dynamics and rock engineering.
Involved in projects in Italy and abroad, including foundation design
of major plants in the Nile delta (Egypt) and in Poland, interaction
studies for gas storage tanks located in seismic areas, soil
liquefaction studies for pipelines in the North Sea, foundation
design for gas and steam turbines, design of harbour structures,
hydraulic tunnels and open cut excavations in urban areas. |
| 1998- |
As President of Geodeco S.p.A. Dr. Pelli was involved in the
development of a computer system for seismic microzonation keeping into
account soil non-linearity, and in several major research projects were
such system was applied. He also carried out non-linear site response
analyses for three nuclear power plants in Switzerland, and led a study
on pile-soil seismic interaction in liquefaction-prone soil in Italy.
At the same time Dr. Pelli was also involved in many other projects
related to harbour and offshore structures in Italy, Kazakhstan and
Nigeria, to Large Dams in Italy, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia and to deep
excavations in urban areas and in difficult ground conditions.
Additional activities included the geotechnical design of vibrating
machines in co-generation power plants and the stabilization of large
landslides affecting the safety of human settlements.
